The multifunction radar for the U.S. B-1 Lancer bomber has the basic designation AN/APQ-164. Like many other advanced electronics systems, it follows a "spiral evolution" model in which there can be major upgrades within the same basic designation. For example, the first version uses a passive electronically scanned array (PESA) antenna system, but the next generation moves to active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology.

This radar has a substantial amount of common replacement parts (i.e., Line Replaceable Units) with the AN-APG/68 radar used in F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft.
